Later Parks of Longmont

Vintage photo of the Tower of CompassionTuesday, May 11, 12 pm, free. This virtual event is presented in partnership with Elevations Credit Union.

Paula Fitzgerald, author of “Stories of Our Longmont Parks” joins us for this new event covering a sampling of Longmont’s parks developed after a 45-year lull beginning in 1969. Parks with compelling namesakes or stories will be included. Paula will present the inspiring story of Kanemoto Park and how its iconic Tower of Compassion came to be. Who was Byron Carr, and why was he honored with a park’s naming? We’ll cover the stories of Frederick Flanders and the volatile times of the Ku Klux Klan. In learning about Lefthand Creek Park, who was Chief Niwot (Lefthand), and what are the impacts of his life and death? And finally, we’ll discuss Sandstone Ranch, the Coffin family’s famous and infamous legacy.
