A sleeper vehicle means a camper coach, camper trailer, motor home, multi-purpose trailer, trailer coach, or recreational vehicle, including any vehicle converted to serve as temporary living or sleeping accommodation.
An individual makes contact with Longmont Police or with Code Enforcement. An enforcement official is sent to the vehicle’s location and will place a notice on the vehicle requiring compliance. The enforcement official will return (as calls for service allow) to ensure the sleeper vehicle has been removed from the right-of-way, or that a permit has been obtained. If the sleeper vehicle is not in compliance a citation may be issued or the vehicle may be towed.
If you received an abandoned sleeper vehicle notice, you have two options:
- Remove the vehicle from the public right-of-way. You may not move the vehicle to another location within the public right-of-way. If it is found elsewhere on public property, it may be subject to tow.
- Obtain a temporary permit.
A 7-day permit is available through the City of Longmont for a charge of $25. No more than four such permits shall be issued for each vehicle in a given year. To obtain a permit please file an online request or call Code Enforcement at 303-651-8695. Permits may not be issued back-to-back. When the permit expires, the sleeper vehicle may not be parked on the public way for the following seven days.
Residents must follow the Longmont Municipal Code. However, HOAs can take enforcement action to enforce their own additional bylaws.
These may be removed at the property owner’s discretion and expense without police action. It is recommended that the owner contact the police department to ensure the vehicle is not stolen. Junked vehicles left on “private property” are processed by the City of Longmont Code Enforcement at 303-651-8695 or report a complaint online.
No. Longmont Municipal Code prohibits the use of a sleeper vehicle as an accessory dwelling unit on a residential zoned lot. Property owners may allow a sleeper vehicle to park their unoccupied sleeper vehicle on a driveway or on your property as long as the vehicle is parked on an all-weather surface (gravel, asphalt, concrete, etc.) where legal parking is allowed. Residents in a Homeowners Association (HOA) should refer to their homeowner’s bylaws for restrictions that may apply.
