Longmont Recreation Extends Pandemic Ice Season

Longmont City Council voted last night to extend the Longmont Ice Pavilion’s season using contingency funds to cover the anticipated operational deficit related to COVID-19 capacity limitations. The ice rink was originally slated to close earlier than usual due to financial constraints related to operating in a pandemic, but the $32,000 provided by City Council will close the financial gap this spring and allow the Ice Pavilion to close at its usual time March 14th.

“Everyone is feeling the financial pinch this year, and Recreation is no exception. The money provided by Council will make it possible to keep the ice pavilion open through our usual season,” said Jeff Friesner, Recreation Services Manager.  “Finances aside, the outdoor ice pavilion has been a relatively safe activity for folks as skaters can easily distance, it’s outdoors, and it’s a great physical and mental boost during the winter. The ability to keep the rink open is a boon for those looking for healthful activities in our remaining winter months.”

Longmont Ice Pavilion operations will continue in accordance with current county and state COVID-19 health guidance. Public ice skating, drop-in ice hockey, and learn-to-skate lessons are available by advance reservation only.  The youth league hockey will be extended for existing enrollees. Skate rentals are also available by advance reservation-only; no day-of skate rentals will be permitted. All regular admission and skate rental fees apply.  No one will be admitted without a reservation. Due to health department-ordered capacity limitations, reservations must be made for all ages, including small children.

Visitors to the Ice Pavilion will be asked to follow the current COVID-19 best practices guidelines. Guidelines include maintaining 6 feet of distance from others not of the same household, wearing a mask, refraining from gathering, and exiting the facility promptly at the end of the reservation. Visitors are also reminded to arrive skate-ready as no changing tents will be available. A full list of COVID-19 recreation and ice pavilion guidelines can be found online at bit.ly/recreationcovidguide.

Ice Pavilion reservations can be made online using the keyword “skate” on the activity registration website or visiting https://rec.ci.longmont.co.us/wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/search.html?keyword=skate up to 14 days (rolling 336 hour) in advance, or you can call 303-651-8404.
