William John Kiteley came from Wisconsin to the St. Vrain Valley in 1869 and joined the Chicago-Colorado Colony. He homesteaded a quarter-section of land seven miles northeast of Longmont. In 1871, he returned to Wisconsin to marry Margaret Cornelia Kalb and brought his bride, his parents, and their children to Colorado. Convinced of the necessity of education, Kiteley felt it imperative to have a home built in town so his children could attend High School.

Kiteley was a founder of the First National Bank. He served on the Town of Longmont Board of Trustees from 1876 through 1879 and was a Director of Longmont Building and Loan Association. Mr. Kiteley also served on the School Board from 1895 until his death in 1907.
