Free Talk: The United States of LEGO

Join us for a conversation with LEGO builders Billie Abbitt, Evan Crouch and Nikki Malone Daniels, whose work is featured in our LEGO exhibit! Renowned for their ability to foster creativity and imagination, the simple building blocks known as LEGO allow individuals to construct anything they can imagine, providing a blank canvas for endless possibilities. This emphasis on creativity has not only shaped the way we play but has also influenced the fields of design, architecture, and engineering.

Offered in conjunction with our current exhibition, “Build: Design & Create with LEGO!“

About the Builders

Billie Abbitt is the founder of Brickscape Cafe, a community-centric space that brings people of all ages together through LEGO® play and creative activities. Drawing on his experiences as the owner of Common Grounds in Gainesville, FL, in the ’90s, Billie knows the importance of a welcoming, shared space where community thrives. After a 25-year career in HealthTech, where he became captivated by LEGO’s ability to support diverse challenges, Billie took a leap to create a place that bridges generations and fosters connection. Inspired by his own journey of using LEGO play to overcome burnout and reconnect with joy, Billie opened Brickscape Cafe as a store and gathering spot for builders, dreamers, and friends. From hosting events to offering hands-on activities, Billie’s vision for Brickscape Cafe is simple: build something great together, one brick at a time.

Evan Crouch specializes in building historical LEGO dioramas, with a focus on natural looking landscapes. A member of both CoWLUG and DENLUG, his builds are regularly featured in international magazines and blogs and he is on the editorial staff of EuroBricks. In 2023, he founded the Colorado-based company Rocky Mountain Minifigs, which designs and sells history-based LEGO minifigures.

Nikki Malone Daniels: My mom and I joined the LEGO Users Groups and within the first few months, we were participating in shows, going to meetings and helping with our first large collab for “Bricks and Minifigs: a Harry Potter Display.” I am the Event Coordinator for both the Denver LUG (DENLUG) and Colorado-Wyoming LUG (COWLUG). These groups have helped me come out of my shell and find people with common interests not just in LEGO but other interests as well. I found not only friends, but a family who I can build/collab amazing things with, who I can learn from, who I can share ideas with and has also brought amazing opportunities to display builds, to show the public what I and the LUGs have made, to interact with the public, educate them and have fun with them, see other Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOL) community members awe-inspiring works of art and play D&D with one of the designers of the set.
