GIS Day

The City of Longmont GIS team will host an informational display on Wednesday, Nov. 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Longmont Library to celebrate GIS Day.

The City of Longmont, Colorado uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in a multitude of ongoing projects to help make informed decisions related to urban planning, utilities, emergency response, infrastructure management and public services to enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.

Spanning everything from the 10-year recovery from the devastating 2013 flood to vital emergency response teams to ongoing snowplow operations and more, all of these widely different projects have and continue to use GIS as the cornerstone that connects integrated systems and enhances these municipal operations.

The GIS Day event will include a question-and-answer display area from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the Kimbark Street entrance of the Library, followed by a larger visual display of many projects and items in the Library Conference Room on the northwest corner of the building from 12 – 4 p.m. In addition, a treasure hunt will be set up in the Children’s area of the Library from Nov. 13 – 17 that will let younger family members use GIS and geocaching to further explore the world around them.

For those interested in learning more about GIS for personal hobbies or education, some free personal use licenses will be available in a limited supply. There will also be several Longmont-branded swag items available.
