Virtual Art & Sip: Painting Poppies (Acrylic)

Join Museum instructor Ms. Leigh for this series that explores the differing styles of acrylic painting. We will learn a few techniques in each class. The acrylic classes will explore water lilies and fields of poppies.

Supplies Needed

  • A Canvas per class (or canvas board, or even primed cardboard if you don’t have access to a canvas)
  • Plastic Palette or paper plates to mix paints
  • Masking Tape
  • Water container
  • Paper towels or cotton painting towels (I make mine from old cotton t-shirts)
  • Newspaper, or something like it, to cover your work space
  • Scrap paper
  • Paint Brushes: I will be using: 3/4″ flat, 1/2″ flat, 1/4″ flat, 1/2″ filbert, 1 medium round, 2 small rounds for tiny lines. You can easily just use a 1/2” flat and a small round if you don’t want to buy lots of brushes
  • Acrylic Paints (paint names in parenthesis)
    • White (Titanium White)
    • Black (Mars Black)
    • Brown (Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber)
    • Warm Red (Grumbacher Red)
    • Cool Red (Alizarin Crimson)
    • Yellow (Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue)
    • Green (Hooker’s Green and Phthalo Green)
    • Blue (Ultramarine Blue)
    • Purple (Dioxazine Purple)

How to Participate:

Visit the Longmont Museum’s Facebook LIVE page at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, February 17, with your supplies ready. The instructor will guide you through the project through video.

About the Instructor:

Leigh Putman is an artist and educator who has been the Program Leader at the Longmont Museum since 2017. As the Program Leader she plans and teaches programs such as Discovery Days (for kids 2-6 years old), summer camps, and art programs for adults. Before joining the Longmont Museum, Leigh was an art teacher and a museum restoration specialist. Her educational background includes a BFA in Painting with a Minor in Art History. In her home studio, Leigh finds inspiration in botanical subjects and in photos of everyday moments that she has taken throughout her life. Leigh’s favorite mediums are watercolor, acrylic, and pen & ink.
