Oct. 9, 2023 – The City of Longmont is planning to close the south half of the Boston Avenue Bridge over St. Vrain Creek starting Thursday, Oct. 12. Two-way traffic will be shifted to the north half of the bridge and two lanes will remain open to vehicles through the beginning of March 2024. During this time, the existing eastbound lane and center turn lane will be closed. Vehicles will be allowed to travel in both east and westbound directions on Boston Avenue but the turn lane on the bridge will not be available.
This temporary traffic realignment is being done so the south side of the Boston Avenue bridge can be demolished and reconstructed. The north side of the bridge will remain open and completely safe for vehicles to travel across. Bicyclists will need to merge into the travel lane. Pedestrians are prohibited from crossing the bridge. When the south side of the bridge is completed in March 2024, the two-lanes of traffic will be shifted to the new portion of the bridge so the north side can be reconstructed. The bridge will remain open to vehicles and bicycles for the duration of construction.
The intersection of South Francis Street and Boston Avenue is currently closed and will remain closed through Nov. 22. South Francis Street is open to local traffic but no turns are allowed to or from Boston Avenue.
The speed limit across the Boston Avenue bridge will be reduced to 25 mph during construction and delays are likely. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes to South Sunset Street and Nelson Road.
