The Longmont Museum welcomes back the Sundance Film Festival for this special screening of Carla Gutiérrez’s documentary Frida, which premiered at the festival in 2024 and received the Jonathan Oppenheim Editing Award: U.S. Documentary. All are invited to join us for a meet & greet with the filmmakers and Sundance Film Festival staff before the film beginning at 6pm.
An intimately raw and magical journey through the life, mind and heart of iconic artist Frida Kahlo, Frida is told through her own words for the very first time. Drawn from her famed illustrated diary, the film reveals letters, essays and candid print interviews — and is brought vividly to life by lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork. The feature film directorial debut of acclaimed editor Carla Gutiérrez (RBG, La Corona), Frida posits a striking context as to why the artist – and her art – remains as powerful as ever.
Carla Gutiérrez is an Emmy and Eddie nominated documentary filmmaker. Her directorial debut FRIDA, about iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, premiered at Sundance 2024 where it won the prestigious Jonathan Oppenheim Award for Best Editing. FRIDA (TIME Studios, Imagine Documentaries) is an Amazon MGM Studios original. Her work as an editor includes the Oscar nominated films RBG – about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg – and LA CORONA. Carla edited JULIA, about renowned chef, and television personality Julia Child (Telluride, Toronto Film Festivals, CNN Films); and PRAY AWAY (Tribeca, Telluride, Netflix Original). Her work has received awards at Sundance, Tribeca, Berlinale, Outfest, the Critic’s Choice Awards, the National Board of Review Awards and the DuPont Columbia Awards. She has been a creative adviser for the Sundance Edit Lab, and a mentor for the Firelight Producers’ Lab, The Karen Schmeer Diversity Program, and the Tribeca Film Fellows program. Carla is a member of the Academy of Motion Pictures and the American Cinema Editors. She received a Masters in Documentary Film from Stanford University.
MG Evangelista is a Filipino born filmmaker from the Bay Area. Evangelista’s work blends evocative imagery and drama with touches of levity. Their debut feature film, Burning Well, currently in development, has been supported by SFFILM Rainin, Tribeca, Array, the Torino Feature Film Lab and Film Independent’s Screenwriting Lab and Fast Track. The feature is based on their award-winning short film Fran This Summer playing in over thirty festivals including the Sundance Film Festival. Evangelista was a USA Fellowship Award recipient and a participant in AFI’s DWW+ program, as well as the Warner Bros. Discovery Access Directors Program. Evangelista holds an MFA from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts Graduate Film Program and is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder.
