What Really Happened in Iran in 1953? Deconstructing the Stories We Tell

In this lecture, we critically assess the standard academic narrative about the 1953 coup in Iran. We find that the “story told” is both incomplete and oversimplified, but this story has tremendous cultural significance. We conclude by considering the following questions: Are there lessons for us about how knowledge is produced, and reproduced? Is it possible that how we tell history reveals more about ourselves than it reveals about the people in the past whose history we tell?
Dr. Feinhandler has a Ph.D. in Political Geography from the University of Colorado, and master’s degrees in both Geography and Religious Studies. In addition to his position at FRCC, he serves on faculty at the University of Colorado and consults in the private sector on topics of international affairs.
