The Fourth Phase of Longmont’s Universal Recycling Ordinance Is Now Effective

June 1, 2025– The fourth phase of Longmont’s Universal Recycling Ordinance (URO) is now in effect, requiring organics (composting) collection for select business types, producing food waste including:

  • restaurants, food trucks, food shelves and food banks
  • caterers
  • hotels, nursing and residential care facilities and hospitals
  • public/rental commissaries or shared use commercial kitchens
  • breweries and distilleries
  • office buildings and colleges with dining services
  • event centers, golf courses and country clubs
  • the City may identify additional business types in the future and will ensure that those impacted are aware

Our intention is to work alongside the commercial and multifamily sector to implement the URO. We know that some businesses will need additional guidance and time. The City has received feedback from businesses that financial assistance programs would help in getting started complying with the URO. The City is currently offering two methods of financial assistance: Zero Waste Coupons in partnership with Boulder County and CAReS Program Recycling Rebates for Tenants. To learn more about available URO Financial Assistance, visit bit.ly/URO-Financial-Assistance.

In addition to offering financial assistance and other support for compliance, commercial or multifamily properties that meet any qualifying conditions may qualify for an exemption. For more information on the URO, visit the City’s URO Information Website, bit.ly/URO-info.

If you have any questions on the Universal Recycling Ordinance, please contact the City’s Zero Waste Coordinator at sustainability@longmontcolorado.gov or call (303) 651-8416 for more information.
