A Shocking Reminder
A Shocking Reminder
Want an unforgettable electric safety lesson? Come watch us zap an action figure.
No, it’s not some new, weird video game – it’s the return of Live Line, our doll-sized demonstration of just how dangerous touching a power line can be. We’ll be bringing it with us to the upcoming Rhythm at Roosevelt on Sept. 16. (Talk about energizing the crowd!)
If you haven’t seen Live Line at a previous event, the concept’s pretty simple. We set up a diorama that includes a miniature power line with live current – and then show what happens when a mini-figure (or anything else) comes into contact with a few thousand volts. Hint: It involves visible flame and a deep gratitude that it isn’t YOU.
Why do we do it? Because it drives home the need for safety. Remember:
- When you see a downed or broken power line, STAY AWAY and call us at 303-651-8386 to come fix it. That line can energize the ground for 35 feet around it, so keep clear!
- Always assume that downed lines are energized. You cannot tell by looking.
- Never fly a drone, kite or model plane anywhere near the power lines – especially since a kite string can carry the electrical current right to you! If something gets stuck in the power lines, don’t try to remove it yourself: STAY AWAY and call us.
- Never climb a tree that’s near a power line, and if you’re raising a ladder or pole, make sure that it won’t come within 10 feet of any lines.
Want to see it rather than read it? Come visit the Longmont Power & Communications table at Rhythm. We’ll be glad to light up your afternoon.
After all, it’s a great way to stay current on safety.
