Avian Flu Found in Deceased Birds in Colorado

Longmont is seeing a small number of deceased birds in a limited number of City parks. The cause of their death is mostly likely bird flu (Avian Flu) which is highly infectious and can spread very quickly among birds. The Bird Flu can also be transmitted to other animals if they eat the infected bird carcasses or come in contact with them. Some strains of the highly pathogenic bird flu can infect humans.

Residents should NOT touch or move sick or dead birds.

If you must dispose of a dead bird(s) on your private property, take these steps to limit your risk:

• Wear a mask, eye protection (such as sunglasses) and gloves to collect the dead birds.

• Using a long-handled shovel, put the dead bird in double bags and place it in an outdoor trash container.

• Throw away gloves and mask and wash your hands immediately after.

To report a deceased bird on City property, please contact the City of Longmont Customer Service Call Center at 303-651-8416.
