At approximately 9am this morning (Monday, 4/6/20) a woman was pulled over by a man in the area of 9th and Spencer (NW side of Longmont). The male was driving an older model white full-size Ford Bronco and placed a rotating dome light on the vehicle. The man approached her vehicle and stated that he was checking to make sure she was on “essential travel”. The driver was described as a thin white male, 6’ tall, dark brown hair and a goatee. He was wearing a black shirt and blue jeans. Please call Longmont dispatch at (303)651-8501 if you have any information regarding the identity of this individual. Longmont Police are not pulling over residents for non-essential travel. If you have any concerns an individual is not associated with the Longmont Public Safety please call 9-1-1. LPD #20-2789.

Please consider the following when pulled over by a vehicle you believe may be a police imposter.

  • Could you have done something that has warranted you being pulled over? Speeding, running a red light, u-turn, weaving, etc. Is this a marked patrol car or an unmarked unit?
  • If you can pick a well-lit area, in a public location to pull over, you should do so. If you are stopped in a well-lit public location and suspect that the vehicle is not an officer, dial 9-1-1, lock your vehicle, and leave the window rolled up. Let the person approaching your vehicle know that you have called 911 to verify the officer is with an agency. Dispatch will stay on the phone with you until that verification is made. Dispatch will also let the officer know they are on the phone with you.
  • If you are on a rural road in a remote area, slow down and call 9-1-1.A 9-1-1 center will be aware an officer is trying to stop you. Please slow down but do not stop moving until you can confirm the agency and identity of the officer. Turn on your emergency flashers. It must be clear that you are not trying to flee the area.
  • Know your location. When you call 9-1-1 provide communication specialists a good description of your location to include city/town, street name, landmark or store you are close to. This will allow dispatchers to quickly locate you. Please remember, depending on your location, your call may be routed to a different dispatch center.
  • All officers in Colorado must carry a business card with their name and their agency name. All officers also have an agency-issued identification card.If the officer refuses your request, stay calm.Call 911 immediately and stay on the line. You may also request that the officer call for a second officer. A commissioned police officer will understand your concern and have no issues waiting for a second officer or a supervisor.
