BNSF Railroad Crossing Reopened
BNSF Railroad Crossing Reopened
UPDATED AT 8:15 AM SATURDAY, OCT. 3, TO SHOW RAILROAD CROSSING HAS BEEN REOPENED. NO FURTHER UPDATES ARE ANTICIPATED OVER THE WEEKEND.
The railroad crossing on State Highway 66 between Erfert and Alpine Streets (east of Walmart) has been reopened to traffic. BNSF Railway crews finished working and reopened the crossing in the wee hours of Saturday morning, according to an update from representatives of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT).
BNSF has experienced periodic issues at the SH 66 rail crossing, leading to multiple temporary emergency repairs during September. A longer shutdown to make permanent repairs to the crossing began 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29 and was originally expected to take two full days. Needed repairs to the railroad crossing were more extensive than originally anticipated, leading to a shutdown of four full days.
The crossing will remain open through the weekend, but roadwork signs will remain in place, CDOT said. Part of the needed work on the eastbound shoulder of the crossing was unable to be completed, and final checks of the work also need to be made by BNSF and CDOT next week, according to a status update from CDOT to Longmont staff. Once that final work is completed, road and railroad striping will be reapplied to the area.
Travelers are able to use the crossing, but are encouraged to be aware of the possibility of rough portions of the crossing and missing lane and crossing safety lines.
This railroad work is not a City of Longmont project, and the repairs are being coordinated by and paid for by BNSF and CDOT. Updates on this project will be shared as available on the City of Longmont’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
