Can Doing Crafts Help Kids with Reading and Writing?
Short answer: yes!
Every other Thursday, the Library hosts Craft Storytime. During the first half hour, we have our usual storytime, which includes stories, singing, and dancing. In the second half hour, we work on a craft related to that day’s theme. Last January, for example, we read books about trucks and made a garbage truck craft. In other craft storytimes, children have read about caterpillars and made caterpillar collages, or learned about gardening and painted their own flower pots. Children enjoy drawing, gluing, painting, and using scissors—all excellent opportunities to develop fine motor skills.
We plan our storytimes to be entertaining, but we also work hard to develop and promote early literacy practices. This includes caregiver interaction, singing, playing, and practicing gross and fine motor skills. All of this helps children prepare to read and write!
