Census Power – It Figures!

When you think about it, this blog writes a lot about power.

Sometimes it’s the electrical power that LPC has reliably provided since 1912 at some of the lowest rates in the state (even when accounting for summertime demand).

Sometimes it’s the fiber-optic power of NextLight, connecting Longmont to the world with internet speeds that are among the best in the nation.

And many times, we’re plugging into the power of community, the residents and businesses of Longmont who help us plan an energy future, launch a successful community internet service, and stand at the heart of everything we do.

Today, we’re plugging into that community power.

Because now it’s time for everyone to come to their census. Diverse Faces Under Magnifying Glass

Yes, that’s still going on. The official 2020 Census Day was back in April, and a lot of us hopped online to take care of that quick form. (Especially since, with lockdowns underway, there wasn’t a lot else to do!) But with the COVID-19 pandemic slowing things down and stretching them out, the census deadlines have been extended. That means self-responses are still being collected through the end of October, to make sure that everyone gets counted.

That matters. A lot. And not just for a cool-looking number in a Wikipedia entry.

An accurate count means more and better funding opportunities for the city, from paving roads to supporting libraries.

An accurate count can mean more political representation for Colorado on a national level.

Heck, if we get a big enough response here, we can make Boulder look like a bunch of slowpokes. That’s worth a few minutes of typing all by itself.

If you’ve done it already, great! If not, head for the Census self-response site and fill it out. It’s quick, easy and painless, I promise.

And if you feel powerful for a moment, I don’t blame you.

After all, you’ve just become someone who counts.
