Commercial customers show their power with 5.2 million kWh savings

Longmont’s largest electric customers are saving enough energy to power nearly 650 Longmont homes for a year, according to the City’s electric utility, Longmont Power & Communications.

That savings – a total of 5.2 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) – came from the energy efficiency projects of 22 commercial-rate customers, which qualified for $1 million in rebates from the utility’s Efficiency Works program. LPC said the projects will save the businesses an estimated $410,000 a year in utility costs while also helping to create a more sustainable Longmont.

“As a community, we’ve become very conscious of where our energy comes from and how it’s generated,” said LPC Executive Director David Hornbacher. “When we’re equally conscious about how we use that energy, it can make a big difference for all of us. I applaud these customers for their remarkable efforts and all of our customers for the steps they take every day to save energy and make a better community.”

The efficiency projects include LED lighting upgrades, improved insulation, refrigeration efficiencies, new chillers, improved controls, and motor and pump variable frequency drives (VFDs).
