Dive Into the New Year and Get Certified to be a Longmont Swim Instructor

Being a swim instructor can be fun, life-saving work. Interested? The City of Longmont is offering swim instructor classes this January and February to anyone who wants to become certified to teach swim lessons. To become a swim instructor with the City of Longmont, applicants need to have either a Longmont Swim Instructor (LSI) or a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.

Longmont Swim Instructor (LSI) Certification Class

  • Two-day class on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20, 8:30 am – 3 pm.
  • FREE!
  • Register online.

Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification Class

  • Four-day class, Friday through Monday, Feb. 14 – 17, 9 am – 6 pm.
  • Cost is only $50 for those who want to teach for the City of Longmont and $250 for others.
  • Registration online.

The LSI certification is an excellent choice for those interested in teaching preschool swim classes and beginning their teaching journey. The LSI certification is a shorter class, and applicants do not need to be able to swim butterfly or breaststroke. This certification allows individuals to teach preschool swim classes at the City of Longmont at a starting rate of $16.43/hour.

The WSI certification is a nationally recognized certification from the American Red Cross. Successful completion of this course allows individuals to teach all American Red Cross levels, including teen, adult, and parent-tot classes. WSI certified instructors earn a starting rate of $17.93/hour at the City of Longmont.

In addition to competitive pay, Longmont swim teachers receive paid monthly trainings, free or highly discounted future certifications, and free recreation passes.

Swim teachers enjoy flexible schedules, allowing them to balance teaching with other commitments. Instructors have the option to work for a few weeks at a time and then take extended breaks for weeks or several months. Available hours include weekend mornings, weekday evenings, as well as midday. This flexibility makes swim teaching an attractive option for students, retirees, and those looking for a part-time opportunity.

What’s cool about teaching swim lessons?

  • Witnessing the transformation of a student from being hesitant and fearful in the water to becoming confident and eager to swim is an incredibly rewarding experience. Swim lessons can empower students to overcome their fears and embrace new challenges.

  • Swimming is an excellent form of exercise that promotes physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle. Teaching swim lessons encourages children to adopt healthy habits that can benefit them throughout their lives.

  • Sharing knowledge and skills provides an opportunity to connect with students and their families and make a tangible contribution to the Longmont community.
