Graphic Novels Offer Unique Literacy Skills
Does your child love Dog Man? That’s a fantastic thing, it means your kid is reading and enjoying it!
We find that a lot of parents express worry when their kids only read graphic novels and generally, as librarians, we say no need to worry. When kids have the freedom to choose what they read, they are much more likely to continue reading and developing literacy skills for school and life. When children (or anyone for that matter) read graphic novels, they develop unique visual literacy skills, new vocabulary, associate reading with joy, and interact with a diversity of story-telling techniques. Graphic novels cover very diverse genres and stories. This format is full of amazing creators from a diversity of backgrounds that reflect the diversity of our communities. Graphic novels are great and we hope kids will never be shamed for want they love to read!
