Hover St. and CO-119 intersection to see safety and mobility improvements after federal RAISE grant funds awarded
After 10 years of planning and four years of lobbying and interagency collaboration, the City of Longmont’s transportation division is proud to announce improvements to the safety and mobility of the Hover Street and Diagonal Highway (CO-119) intersection as a part of the $25 million dollar RAISE grant awarded to make improvements along the entire CO-119/Diagonal highway.
The federal RAISE (Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity) program receives $15 billion dollars in requests with a budget of only $2.26 billion nationally. Working together with the City of Boulder, Boulder County, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Longmont staff focused on the safety of the intersection and the opportunities for sustainable multimodal transportation between Longmont and Boulder. Proposed improvements to the intersection include the construction of automobile and bicycle/pedestrian underpasses in the Boulder-bound direction, improving bus access and adding a bike path within the median of CO-119 between Longmont and Boulder.
“It feels like a lot of long-term transportation planning work is coming to fruition and that’s really exciting,” says Transportation Planning Manager Phil Greenwald. “Between the $25 million dollar award from the RAISE grant, a new $1 million state grant to help construct a new multimodal connection for a new transit station between the St. Vrain Greenway and the planned Coffman Street improvements north of 1st Avenue and being named a top 10 mid-size city for biking by People for Bike’s 2023 ‘Best Places to Bike’–all in the same week–I’m hopeful our community can feel even more positive about our progress and potential in safely, efficiently getting around our City and region.”
Now that RAISE funds have been announced, this interagency project will be managed by CDOT in close collaboration with county and municipal departments. Project design and outreach is expected to continue through the end of 2024, with construction to follow in 2025 and beyond.
