Join Longmont’s Native American Heritage Month Celebration on November 2
Longmont’s Native American Heritage Month Celebration will be held on Saturday November 2, from 11 am to 4 pm, at the Longmont Senior Center (910 Longs Peak Ave). This free event is open to the public and features family activities, Native dancers and drummers, storytelling, food, giveaways and more.
Inspired by the Longmont Sister Cities Association’s work in establishing a formalized relationship with the Northern Arapaho Tribe, the annual event highlights Native American history, culture and traditions. The event was created to foster awareness and healing by bridging the gap between the Longmont community and the original people of this land.
Scheduled activities include:
- Teepee raising with the Longtime Sleeping Family from the Wind River Reservation
- Dancing and music by Northern Colorado Youth and Drifting Bull Drum Group
- Sessions focused on craft projects, drum making and storytelling
- An educational presentation on traditional foods
- A screening of “Who She Was” documentary film (which highlights the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Children movement) including Q&A with filmmaker Jordan Dresser
- Food including Indian tacos (featuring fresh fry bread made on site)
“This year’s event aims to engage our community with multigenerational-focused activities, performances, and presentations geared toward cultural awareness and traditions,” said Longmont Children, Youth and Families Community Coordinator Jenny Diaz-Leon. “We are excited to welcome so many terrific performers and presenters to Longmont.”
Sponsors for the event include the Longmont Native American Heritage Month Committee, the Longmont Community Foundation, the Longmont Multicultural Action Committee, Friends of the Longmont Senior Center, and the City of Longmont.
