Keeping Cool in the Cold
Keeping Cool in the Cold
If you’ve lived in Colorado long enough, you know that October introduces three words into the daily news: “Chance of Snow.”
Seems unbelievable, I know. But this is still the state where Halloween costumes include a coat. So before snowflake images start to sneak back into the forecasts, it’s time for a reminder on our winter weather outage tips.
Longmont has a history of reliable power. We see very few power outages and our crews typically fix any that occur in an hour or less. But severe weather can hit even the most reliable electric utility. That means it’s good to be prepared.
Because “snow season” is such a regular visitor, our blog pieces include a series of winter tips. Part 1: Getting Ready lays out what to do before a major storm hits, such as keeping vital supplies close to hand (things like batteries, non-perishable food, and a non-electric can opener that lets you get at the food) and making plans for where to go if you have to leave the house. Part 2: Staying Safe provides the do’s and don’ts to remember if your power does go out. Yes, bundle up. No, don’t keep opening the doors – you really are letting the heat out. And no, don’t EVER try to use outdoor heaters indoors or use your oven as a space heater. (Believe me, someone has tried and regretted it.)
There’s plenty more to see, so follow the links. Study the tips. Make your plans. Colorado weather can change fast, but the basics remain the same. Be ready, just in case, because thinking ahead now can save worry later.
You could even call it a snow-brainer.
