Large Police Presence in 600 Block of Baker Street
On January 13, 2022 at approximately 2:20 pm a victim who had located their stolen vehicle in an alley near 4th and Baker called 911. The Longmont Emergency Communications Center (LECC) dispatched Longmont officers and the stolen vehicle was located with four occupants. One of those occupants, a male, ran from the vehicle.
Police set up a perimeter and the male was located by a Longmont officer in the 600 block of Baker Street. Once located, the suspect fired multiple rounds at the officer while running northbound towards Longs Peak Avenue. The officer did not return fire.
In the 100 block of Longs Peak Avenue, a second officer then approached the suspect in an unmarked vehicle and activated his emergency lights. The suspect fired at least one round at the officer, striking the driver’s side hood of the officer’s pickup truck. The suspect was then struck by the police officer’s pickup truck. The officer driving the pickup truck did not fire his weapon.
Within moments of being taken into custody, a Longmont CORE paramedic arrived on scene, started first aid, and requested an ambulance for suspect transport. Longmont Department of Public Safety’s CORE team is a specialized co-responder unit comprised of a specially trained police officer, a behavioral health clinician, and a paramedic.
The suspect’s weapon was recovered at the scene. A photograph of the weapon and bullet strike to the unmarked police vehicle are attached.
The suspect was transported to a local area hospital with injuries. The current condition of the suspect is unknown. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The 400 block of Baker St. north to Longs Peak Ave and the 100 block of Longs Peak Ave will be closed while the investigation is conducted.
The Boulder County Investigations Team (BCIT) for the 20th Judicial District is investigating this case. This multi-agency team is designated to investigate incidents in which any law enforcement officer within the 20th Judicial District uses deadly or potentially deadly force against a person while acting under the color of official law enforcement duties. The Boulder County Investigation Team quickly responded to Longmont and will be conducting an extremely thorough investigation. Consistent with the Boulder County protocol, the Longmont Police Department will not participate in the use of force investigation. Longmont Police Services is responsible for the criminal investigation. Per Longmont Police Services policy, the officer driving the pickup truck was placed on administrative leave.
