Life Skills Fair Empowers Youth | La feria de habilidades para la vida empodera a los jóvenes
The City of Longmont’s Children, Youth, and Families division has teamed up with the St. Vrain Valley School District to host a Youth Life Skills Fair. Teens aged 11-17 can explore hands-on workshops on everything from health and practical skills to job opportunities and local City resources. Set in a festival atmosphere, the day will include games, a live DJ and food trucks offering refreshments for purchase. The fun happens Sunday, April 6, from 11 am to 4 pm at the Boulder County Fairgrounds (9595 Nelson Road in Longmont).
While exploring stations on health, future careers and more, youth will gain opportunities to win prizes. The fair aims to give all youth an opportunity to acquire new skills and explore diverse career paths while enjoying each other’s company. New this year is a dedicated parent area, where guardians can gain information and skills to better support their teens – and find ways to entertain younger children attending the event.
“We’re excited to offer an empowering space for teens to gain practical skills, expand their professional horizons and interact with community resources,” said Longmont City Councilmember Shiquita Yarbrough. “Our goal is to make it fun to learn skills that participants will actually use in life, and to help them to broaden the scope of the opportunities they imagine for their futures.”
Representatives from the Longmont Youth Center will be on hand to introduce themselves to participants and share details on the many free afterschool programs and services they offer.
“When young people learn life skills, they become more independent and self-sufficient,” said Christina Pacheco, department director of the City of Longmont’s Human Services. “The City’s Life Skills Fair helps them develop self-awareness and self-management – and promotes responsible decision making.”
While the fair is free, pre-registration is recommended to speed up entry on April 6. Register and learn more at LongmontColorado.gov/LifeSkills.
