Longmont Celebrates Bike to Work Day June 24 with Free Breakfast, Prizes and Bike Support at Civic Center Plaza

Wednesday, June 24 is Bike to Work Day and the City of Longmont encourages all cyclists to swap their four wheels for two and ride their bikes to work, to do errands or just for fun. Participants are invited to stop by the City of Longmont’s Celebration Station at Civic Center Plaza (350 Kimbark St), 7 – 9 am and enjoy a free pancake breakfast provided by the Longmont Lion’s Club.

The City will be giving away free prizes and the Longmont Bicycle Company will be onsite to provide free tech support to cyclists. Additionally, local groups and businesses will be hosting information booths and offering free samples and giveaways.

Participants are encouraged to keep streets and trails safe for everyone by being predictable and courteous. Rules of the road to follow include:

  • Obey the Law: Follow all traffic signs and signals.
  • Go with the Flow: Ride with traffic, not against it.
  • Use bike lanes and trails whenever possible..
  • Signal Your Moves: Use hand signals for turns and stops. Always use an audible signal (like a bell or a friendly “on your left!”) before passing pedestrians or other cyclists on the left.
  • Be Safe and Visible: Wear a helmet. Use headlights, taillights and reflectors, especially in the early morning and evening. Colorado law requires the use of front white and rear red lights on all types of bicycles and vehicles.
  • Slow Your Roll: Respect a 15-mph courtesy speed limit on multi-use trails.

Drivers are also encouraged to be extra vigilant as there will be more bicycles on the road than usual. When passing a bicyclist, please give three feet of space, otherwise, please wait behind a bicyclist instead of passing them closely at higher speeds. Per Colorado law, if needed and when it’s safe to do so, you can temporarily cross a solid roadway line to give the bicyclist the safe three feet when passing them.

“Bike to Work Day brings great visibility to how important active transportation is, as every trip made by bicycle or foot is win for the city, region and everyone,” said Cammie Edson, City of Longmont’s Transportation Planning Manager. “We’re proud to host a Celebration Station again this year and hope to see our community come together to help build a culture where more people feel comfortable and confident choosing to bicycle.”

It is expected that thousands of Coloradans will participate in this summer’s Bike to Work Day. Those who want to participate are encouraged to pledge to ride at biketoworkday.co to help show how many Longmont commuters are making the choice to bicycle. Every pledge counts!

Bike to Work Day is an annual event organized by Way to Go, a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments in partnership with eight regional transportation management associations.  To find a bicycle route that you can consider taking to your destination, use the Way to Go route finder.  Bike to Work Day is designed to inspire and support commuters to bike to work, helping them save money on their commutes, improve their health and lower stress levels while reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.
