Longmont Council Member Gabe Santos Elected to National League of Cities HELO Board of Directors
Longmont City Council member Gabe Santos has been elected to the National League of Cities (NLC) Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) Board of Directors for 2016. He will serve a two-year term.
The HELO constituency group was established by NLC in 1976 to serve as a forum for communication and information exchange among Hispanic local government elected officials and NLC colleagues.
“Longmont’s voice should be heard at a national level,” Santos says. “This constituency group brings a unique viewpoint to issues of national importance.”
In addition to providing training and information services to its members, HELO provides guidance to the NLC Board and to its policy committees on major public policy issues affecting the Hispanic and Latino communities. In recent years, the issues brought forth by HELO’s Board of Directors have included the education of Hispanic youth, immigration reform, bilingual education, voting rights and minority business enterprise programs.
Santos has been a member of the HELO board since 2012, and was elected to the second vice president position during the NLC national conference November 4-7 in Nashville, TN.
The National League of Cities (http://www.nlc.org) represents roughly 19,000 municipalities around the country representing more than 218 million Americans.
Santos is a 14-year resident of Longmont. He was first elected to the Longmont City Council in an At Large position in 2008.
