Glen Van Nimwegen is the City of Longmont’s new planning director. 

He began his job in December 2020 replacing Joni Marsh, who previously served as the City’s director of planning and development. She was appointed the City’s assistant city manager in December 2019.

“Glen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Longmont,” Marsh said. “Our community will benefit from his drive, dedication to, and passion for urban planning.”

In addition to being a strong community and social services professional, Van Nimwegen is an experienced community development director with a history of working for cities during times of growth and retraction during the recession. He has experience in urban planning and development review for local governments in Arizona and Colorado – ranging in population from 1,500 (Mountain Village, CO) to over 200,000 (Chandler, AZ). 

He earned his Master of Public Administration (MPA) focused in Urban Management and Planning from Arizona State University and has over 30 years of municipal government experience. Since coming to Colorado in 2011, Glen has worked in Littleton, Mountain Village and most recently was the community development director for the City of Salida.

The new planning director will oversee and manage the planning and code enforcement divisions. “I am excited about this opportunity to help perfect Longmont’s vision of the future; ensure new development reflects that vision and maintain the defining qualities of the community,” Van Nimwegen said. “To me Longmont is the complete package with great neighborhoods, an expanding job base and exciting downtown.”
