Longmont Invites Applications to Design New Official City Flag

Longmont’s Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, on behalf of the City of Longmont, invites community members to apply to design a new official City of Longmont flag. The selected designer will create a distinctive flag that uses symbolism, color, and strong flag design principles to reflect community feedback, shared values, and aspirations for the future.

The current flag was designed in 1974 by Longmont resident Glenn Troester through a Longmont Rotary Club flag design competition. Following community feedback and discussion about the City’s current flag late last year, Longmont City Council directed the AIPP Advisory Board to explore options for commissioning a new flag.

“As we celebrate Colorado’s 150th birthday and 155 years since Longmont’s founding, this is a meaningful opportunity for community members to help create a symbol that reflects who we are today and our shared vision for the future,” said Art in Public Places Administrator Angela Brill.

A panel of AIPP Commissioners, Longmont Rotary members and community members will select three semi-finalists from the pool of applicants to proceed in the flag redesign process. Each semi-finalist will be paid $1,000 for their proposal, and the finalist will receive an additional $1,500 if their design is adopted by City Council.

This opportunity is open to people who currently live in Longmont, Colorado, as well as members of Native Nations whose ancestral homelands include the Longmont area. People of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and experience levels are encouraged to apply.

Applications to design the new flag are due Monday, July 20. Community members who do not wish to apply are encouraged to share ideas that may inspire the final designs through a short survey.
