Longmont Mayor Joan Peck Hosts Transportation Meeting
Transportation issues impact our daily lives in profound ways – from congestion, travel times, and pollution – a reliable, efficient, and safe transportation system is essential to the health of our environment and economy.
With that in mind, Longmont Mayor Joan Peck is inviting the Longmont community to join her and several Colorado transportation representatives to discuss the challenges facing Longmont and neighboring communities on Saturday, December 3, 2022, 9 to 11 am at the Longmont Public Library, rooms A&B located at 409 4th Avenue.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis is sending a representative from his staff, in addition, officials from the Regional Transportation District (RTD), Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Front Range Passenger Rail, and the City of Longmont are scheduled to participate.
Mayor Peck has been involved in a variety of efforts at the national, state, and local levels to help Longmont stay focused on this important facet of our community.
Recently, work by the DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments) Board of Directors and the Northwest Mayors and Commissioner Coalition, both of which Mayor Peck is a member, helped Longmont receive some much-needed relief on the Diagonal Highway (State Highway 119/Ken Pratt Blvd) in the form of construction dollars for intersection and transit improvements between Longmont and Boulder. Additionally, dollars were granted to this project to help create a more direct and safe bikeway linking the communities along this critical State highway.
The City has also secured federal and state dollars to help improve safety on East County Line Road from 17th Ave. to CO 66. We are now waiting to hear about possible federal and state funding for Ken Pratt Blvd/CO 119 through Longmont and CO 66 on the north side of the City.
The State’s work on rail includes a newly formed Front Range Passenger Rail board approved by voters last year. The board, of which Mayor Peck is also a member, has been formed and working to solidify funding mechanisms to help provide the infrastructure needed to support Amtrak-style commuter train service from Cheyenne, Wyoming south to Pueblo via Fort Collins, Loveland, Longmont, and Boulder for the rail section north of the Denver hub.
Statewide efforts are also being made to help Longmont link to the other Front Range communities via passenger rail. These efforts are directly tied into the work done, but not yet completed, by RTD to bring passenger rail service to Longmont, Boulder, Louisville, and Broomfield from the current end-of-line station in Westminster (the B Line).
These issues and many more are up for discussion at the Mayor’s Meetup. Audience members will be encouraged to ask questions using index cards, and to provide opinions at feedback stations located just outside the meeting rooms.
