Longmont Police Respond to Shooting at Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Drive

At approximately 12:33pm on October 13, 2021, Longmont Police Services responded to a shooting at Heatherhill Street and Renaissance Drive.  A postal employee was shot in front of neighborhood mailboxes and died at the scene. Witnesses identified a suspect fleeing the area south on Renaissance Drive. The suspect was wearing dark clothing, a hoodie and a blue mask driving a black Nissan Rogue.

On the evening of October 13, 2021, Longmont Police Services and the US Postal Inspection Service made an arrest in the murder of the postal employee in Longmont. We have arrested Devan Schreiner, age 26, for 1st-degree murder. She is the victim’s ex-girlfriend. Schreiner was booked at the Longmont Police Department and later transported to the Boulder County Jail.

The Longmont Department of Public Safety wants to assure the community that this was not a random act of violence. This crime appears to be an isolated incident and an act of domestic violence. This is still an active investigation.

Updated 10/20/21 at 1:00pm – US Postal Inspection Service Issues Press Release on Second Arrest. Longmont Police Services and the US Postal Inspection Service have made a second arrest in the murder of the Postal Employee in Longmont.  Andrew James “AJ” Ritchie, age 34, was arrested late last night on 1st Degree Murder, Complicity*, and later transported to the Boulder County Jail.  Please contact the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office for updates on the second suspect’s arraignment. 

“Postal Inspectors from across the nation converged into Colorado to support to the Longmont Police with this important investigation. Longmont Police personnel are skilled, experienced and capable of resolving investigations of this nature, and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service considers the safety of USPS employees to be the most critical element of our mission and has committed the full strength of our federal law enforcement resources to bring justice for Longmont Letter Carrier Jason Schaefer and his family,” said Ruth Mendonça, Inspector in Charge of the Denver Division of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. “The arrest of the second suspect in Mr. Schaefer’s homicide demonstrates our collective commitment to leaving no stone unturned in this investigation and to pursue justice to the fullest extent of the law” Mendonça said.

“We thank our partners at the Longmont Police Services Division, the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office and various other law enforcement partners for their collective efforts resulting in the swift identification of those responsible for this terrible homicide,” said Mendonça. “We would also like to offer our sincere condolences to Mr. Schaefer’s family and to the postal family at the Longmont Post Office. Postal Inspectors will continue to support this investigation until the case is successfully adjudicated, and we will continue serving justice to anyone who seeks to harm employees of the U.S. Postal Service.” said Mendonça.
