Longmont to conduct three prescribed burns within City limits
The City of Longmont Ecosystem Management team, in coordination with Longmont Public Safety and Public Works Operations, will be conducting three prescribed burns within the City limits between March 24 and March 31, weather dependent. All of these prescribed burns will be carefully monitored by the Longmont Fire Department and the dates are broadly set to allow personnel the opportunity to wait for ideal weather conditions.
The three burn areas are below, and maps of each area can be found at the bottom of this release:
- Spring Gulch #2, south of 17th Avenue for a distance of approximately 400 yards to the first pedestrian bridge (Northeast Longmont)
- Bonus Ditch, south of Ken Pratt Boulevard, east of the Harvest Junction Apartment complexes (Southeast Longmont)
- Sherwood Open Space, north of WCR 20.5 and east of County Line Road by 1.3 miles (Eastern Longmont)
All access to the areas, including walking trails, will be closed during the day of the burns. Residents may see fire or smoke in the area, but please do not call 911 as prescribed burns are not an emergency. Please do not enter the areas during the burns for any reason. If you have underlying medical conditions and smell smoke, we recommend closing your windows and remaining inside during the burn.
Prescribed burns help lead to better overall ecosystem health by controlling invasive species such as mosquitoes, improving movement of water and promoting better native plant reproduction and plant diversity. These burns also reduce the risk of dangerous wildfires by clearing overgrown vegetation and safely ridding the area of dead leaves, tree limbs and other debris.
If you have any questions about these prescribed burns, call Longmont Land Program Manager Dan Wolford at 303-774-4691 or the Longmont Customer Service Center at 303-651-8416.
