Two programs benefit students beginning school and those heading to college

 

The City of Longmont’s Children, Youth and Families division (CYF) is supporting two programs to help Longmont students and future teachers with their education expenses.

 

• The 529 Jump program provides families of k-3 students with $50 scholarships when they open a 529 savings account.
• The City of Longmont is providing grant money to help Front Range Community College students studying early childhood education.

 

“The City of Longmont is committed to education, and Longmont’s Children Youth and Families division is bringing this commitment to students,” said Hilda Zamora Hursh, Children, Youth and Families manager. “These programs help the families of early grade school children begin saving for higher education and also provide grants for students attending Front Range Community College (FRCC) to study early childhood education. These programs were created to improve the range of early childhood services available in our community, which is a top priority of our City Council.”

As part of Longmont’s commitment to support children’s education, the Longmont City Council has committed $25,000 (annually) in funding to the St. Vrain Education Foundation to offer scholarships. This program is available to St. Vrain Valley School District students, kindergarten through 3rd grade, who sign up for or have a 529 account through CollegeInvest. Once the account is created, parents/guardians can send the CollegeInvest account information to the St. Vrain Education Foundation and the foundation will deposit a $50 scholarship into the student’s account.

The City of Longmont is providing $49,990 in grant money to help Front Range Community College students studying early childhood education. This funding is part of an effort, led by the city’s Children, Youth, and Families Division, to improve early childhood services in the Longmont community.
