Mitigation Plan helps identify hazards, develop risk reduction strategy

The City of Longmont is one of the communities within Boulder County that participates in the Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan (MHMP), which helps guide communities in identifying the types of hazards that threaten communities. The MHMP then provides a framework to help evaluate the risk from those potential hazards and outlines a strategy to reduce or eliminate that risk to both life and property.

This comprehensive plan is updated every five years, approved by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and adopted by participating Boulder County Communities. The Longmont City Council adopted the MHMP on Jan. 23, 2023. The full plan can be found at bit.ly/BOCO-MHMP.

This MHMP ensures that Boulder County and the City of Longmont qualify for access to pre-and post-disaster federal grants. Most projects listed are ongoing and are funded through the City. Only the Hover Reach of the Resilient St. Vrain project is expected to request additional federal grant money. Four projects have been removed from the projects list (expansion of the CERT program, channel improvements on St. Vrain Creek and 119th St., Natural Channel Maintenance Plan and Airport Road Flood Protection Project) and 1 project is on hold (Neighborhood Resilience Plan) mostly due to staff limitations.
