LONGMONT, Colo. – The Longmont Museum has opened its newest exhibit featuring work by Colorado contemporary artist Terry Maker. “Terry Maker: Because the World is Round” is custom designed and built by the artist for the Museum’s gallery. Maker mines commonplace materials, cutting and re-combining them into dense and tactile wall reliefs and large-scale freestanding sculptures.

For this show, she is focusing on a recurring theme in her work—the circle.

“Circles have a host of symbolic meanings, and Terry wants to invoke them all—cosmic, cyclical, universal, sacred…,” said Museum Director Kim Manajek. “Her transformation of our gallery is awe-inspiring.”

Maker comes to the Longmont Museum from a recent comprehensive retrospective at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Museum, featured solo shows at the Fulginiti Gallery in Aurora and the Littleton Museum, and frequent rotation at the Robischon Gallery in Denver.

“The beauty, wit, and message of her work seem to be hitting a chord,” said Manajek.

The exhibition opens the evening of Friday, January 24 and runs through May 17, 2020. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students, seniors, and veterans. Longmont Museum members and children age 3 and under are free.

Terry Maker’s work sets the stage for the Longmont Museum’s programming this season. Her featured exhibition provides a rich context for exploring outer space, symbolism, spirituality and the environment. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) used aircraft, mobile radars, balloon-mounted sensors, and complex computer simulations to measure local air pollution. Presented in collaboration with NCAR’s Explorer Series and the City of Longmont’s Sustainablity Program.
