Groups say 10% savings has been substantial help: “Every dollar counts”
One year after Longmont’s NextLight municipal internet service began offering non-profits a 10 percent discount, 28 groups and organizations have taken advantage of it, collectively saving $6,700 per year.
“We’re saving a substantial amount and the support is great,” said Jana Lohmeier of Mountain View Cemetery, which has operated in Longmont since 1876. “I would encourage everyone to do it.”
NextLight introduced the non-profit discount in November 2024, its 10th anniversary of providing high-speed fiber-optic internet to Longmont residents.
“We intended this as a way to help Longmont’s helpers by allowing their limited dollars to stretch farther and do more,” said Valerie Dodd, NextLight’s executive director. “We’re glad to see so many groups put this to use and we hope to see still more of them do so in the future.”
The GEAR Alliance, which supports K-12 robotics teams in Longmont, has been a NextLight customer since 2015 and began to claim the 10% discount earlier this year. It’s made a significant difference to their activities, Teresa Ewing of the GEAR Alliance said, especially since NextLight was able to help the group find other ways to save on their monthly bill as well.
“We build robots with kids, so we’re buying aluminum, parts from overseas … that discount helped us tremendously,” Ewing said. “We’re in the process of trying to buy our part of the building, so every dollar counts.”
Non-profits who wish to apply for the new discount should call NextLight at 303-774-4494, choosing extension 4 for business accounts.
“NextLight is about community,” Dodd said. “These organizations make our community better, so we want to make them better, too.”
