Police Operation Comes to Peaceful Resolution
Police Operation Comes to Peaceful Resolution
On June 22, 2021, at approximately 11:25 am, Longmont Police Services assisted the Mead Police Department with a traffic stop on an individual driving a white Chevy Silverado pickup, who reportedly threatened to harm family members who reside in Longmont.
The contact resulted in a tense, rapidly evolving, uncertain, high-risk situation for Longmont officers and the community. Officers should be commended for their patience and actions associated with this incident.
When Officers attempted contact with the suspect, he failed to yield to emergency vehicles trying to stop him and displayed a handgun, which he held to his head. Officers followed the pickup and successfully deployed a tire deflation device near 19th Ave and Main St.
After striking the tire deflation device, the suspect continued to drive northbound on Main St and then eastbound on Highway 66. Officers continued following the suspect vehicle until it careened off the south side of the road, just east of the railroad tracks where it came to rest.
At that point, the suspect exited his pickup and again pointed the handgun at his head. Officers closed Hwy 66 in both directions, set a perimeter, and started negotiations in an attempt to deescalate the situation.
As the standoff progressed, the suspect placed his gun on the rear tire of the vehicle. Holding their positions, officers continued to try and convince the suspect to surrender. When he attempted to retrieve the firearm, officers engaged the suspect with two less-lethal beanbag rounds, striking him in the stomach and hand. Shortly after the less-lethal beanbag strikes and a threat to release a Police K9, the suspect surrendered and was arrested without further incident. The suspect is identified as Ramon Orlando Lara (age 36).
Following his arrest, the suspect was transported to an area hospital for a medical clearance. As a result of the impact from the less-lethal beanbag, the suspect sustained a fracture to his hand. Upon his release, he will be transported to the Boulder County Jail on the following charges:
• Felony Menacing
• DUI
• Prohibited use of a weapon (Possession of a firearm while intoxicated)
• Possession of a firearm by a previous offender
• Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle
