Public Safety Warns Residents of Scam Involving Unemployment Benefits
There are residents who have NOT applied for unemployment benefits who are receiving fraudulent letters from what looks like the Colorado Department of Labor and Unemployment informing them their claims have been approved. These letters provide residents with a US Bank Reliacard and instructions as to how their money will be deposited in the account associated with the card. This is a scam, do not respond.
Most residents filing Longmont Police fraud reports as a result of responding to these fraudulent documents are indicating that they are either retired or have not ever been employed.
Most recently, we are getting online reports from residents who are employed with larger companies and businesses both inside and outside of the city limits.
To help those who have been affected by this scam, we are requesting all victims to:
- Visit the state employment website for detailed information on this scam: https://cdle.colorado.gov/unemployment
- File a report with the Longmont Police using our online reporting system if you received this letter and live within the Longmont city limits. This system can be found on the City of Longmont website at www.longmontcolorado.gov under “Find a Service” on the homepage. The report should be filed under “Identity Theft”.
As always, never provide information to anyone that you did not originate the contact with. If you think the contact may be legitimate, look up the phone number yourself and place a direct call to the agency or business.
For additional questions, please call Longmont Police Services at (303)651-8555.
