Seasonal Tips From LPC #2: Decorate safely, inside and out!
Many homes now have that holiday glow, with colorful lights framing a roof, decorating a tree, or adding a little extra sparkle to some well-decked halls. To have a season that’s safe as well as beautiful, remember these tips:
- Recognize when it’s time for well-loved decorations to retire. Frayed wires and loose connections can start a fire, so replace any lights that are becoming worn.
- If you have an unmetered porch light from LPC, please don’t plug outdoor light strings into it. The small fuse can easily be burned out by an exuberant display.
- Keep your tree – or anything else flammable – at least three feet away from heat sources, including fireplaces and space heaters.
- Make sure any extension cords are properly rated for their intended use – indoor or outdoor – and are not overloaded. And please, keep them away from standing water!
- Check to be sure cords haven’t been pinched in a door or window, or under furniture. This can damage the insulation.
- If you still have any lights left to hang, please remember to use proper ladder safety! Lock the ladder’s braces in place, never go higher than the second step from the top, and always face the ladder as you work.
