Shirley Stanosheck donates significant art collection to the Longmont Museum
LONGMONT, Colo. – The Longmont Museum has received a donation of an important collection of Longmont art, the Don and Shirley Stanosheck collection. The work includes 22 paintings by Longmont artists Scott Fraser, Rick Stoner, Barbara Stone, Henry (Dan) Groenewald, John Taft, Dru Marie Robert, and Jake Gaedtke.
A selection of the collection is on view now through November 25 in the Longmont Museum’s Swan Atrium.
After a career in film and technology in California, Don Stanosheck moved to Longmont in 1997. He met his wife Shirley here, and they were married in 2001. Don’s interest in art began in the 1960s, and he collected fine art and antiques from around the world. When he came to Longmont, he shifted focus and began collecting the work of local contemporary artists. He and Shirley built appreciation and friendships by visiting galleries and artists’ studios, and welcomed artists into their home. Soon they created one of the largest collections of Longmont art ever assembled.
Don had ataxia, a disease of the nervous system, his entire life. He didn’t let that stop him from making the most of his life. He passed away at the age of 93 on September 3, 2017. In 2019, Shirley donated 22 works from their collection to the Longmont Museum. This display honors that donation.

A private reception to celebrate the request acquisition of this important collection will be held this Friday, Nov. 15 at 3:30 pm. Media are welcome to attend for photos and for interviews with the Museum’s curators.
