Shock Art Winners announced

The Art in Public Places Commission has announced the five winning designs after a competitive process that brought 28 local artists out to submit their artwork.

Artists’ maquettes, or scaled down models, were on exhibit at the Firehouse Art Center for one week in May, followed by two weeks at the Longmont Museum for two weeks where community members were invited and encouraged to vote for their favorite five designs.  Voters could also participate in the process by voting on line.

Three of the artists are repeat winners: Anne Thouthip and Susanna Nelson each have two boxes painted in Longmont, and Jan Burch has one.  Angela Glenn and Doug Schooner are both first time winners.  Winning designs can be viewed here: 2015 Shock Art.

Artists each receive a $1500 stipend to paint their design on the box selected for them.  They will all be painting their boxes between August 1 and October 1.  For more information on Shock Art, to be added to the Artists list for future calls, or to suggest that a box in your neighborhood be painted, contact AIPP Administrator

To date, there are 24 switchgear boxes that have been painted since 2011. To view all of the Shock Art in the City, as well as the locations, visit the City Facility Directory and then select “Shock Art” as the Amenity. This will filter out our director listing to display just those public art items.
