Staging work for Price Park Tank project to begin

July 29, 2022 – The City of Longmont and contractor Garney Construction will begin pre-construction tasks on Monday, Aug. 1 to prepare for the replacement of the water storage reservoirs near Price Park in central Longmont. This includes temporarily widening Longs Peak Avenue between Sunset Street and the Sunset Pool parking lot, and shifting the two lanes of traffic to the south so that construction equipment can be parked on the north side of Longs Peak Avenue. There will also be initial work on the waterline that runs underneath Sunset Circle.

Residents and commuters should plan for the following construction activities in August during the work hours of Monday – Friday from 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  • Construction on the waterline at Sunset Circle. Impacted residents will be notified of any required short-term water shutoffs at least 24 hours prior to construction.
  • Construction on Longs Peak Avenue (west of Sunset Street) to temporarily widen and shift lanes to the south to create a space for construction equipment.
  • Two-way traffic will be maintained on Longs Peak Avenue but eastbound traffic may be required to stop with the assistance of traffic control flaggers to allow for temporary road widening work.
  • A new temporary sidewalk will be installed on the south side of Longs Peak Avenue. Signage will direct pedestrians and bicyclists to the temporary sidewalk when the existing sidewalk on the north side of Longs Peak Avenue is closed for construction.

Major construction tasks for the Price Park Tank Replacement Project will begin after Labor Day. The project is scheduled to be completed in approximately 18 months, depending on weather and other factors. Additional construction tasks include:

  • Waterline work on Sunset Street and the Sunset Pool parking lot.
  • Demolition of the existing water reservoirs and pump stations near Price Park – the existing water tower will not be impacted.
  • Construction of a new above-ground water storage tank and pump station.
  • Installation of new fencing, landscaping and irrigation system.

Access to all recreation facilities including Price Park, Sunset Park, Sunset Pool and Sunset Golf Course will remain open during construction. Access to the adjacent xeriscape garden and walking path will be closed during construction.

More than 80 percent of voters approved the cost to design and construct this project as part of Water Ballot Issue 3C in the 2020 City of Longmont election. This project is intended to:

  • Protect and improve water quality for the entire city
  • Enhance the City’s ability to meet current and future water demands
  • Provide critical water service during emergencies
  • Significantly reduce the footprint of the existing water structures

The City of Longmont appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during construction of this important water project. Current project information and traffic impacts can be found on the project website at bit.ly/price-park-tank-replacement.
