UPDATED WITH RESCHEDULED CLOSURE DATES

Work to improve storm sewer drainage along 17th Avenue east of Main Street and along the east and west sides of Main St north of 17th Avenue is planned to begin Thursday, April 23. The project, which will replace aging storm sewer infrastructure and add additional storm drain inlets, is anticipated to continue through early September.

A full closure of 17th east of Main is planned beginning Monday, May 4, while a deep manhole is added to facilitate the improvement work. That road closure is expected to last approximately one week, but could be extended depending on weather and underground conditions. Collyer Street is recommended as a detour route around this work zone.

Electronic message boards and detour signs will help with navigation. Area businesses may be accessed from Main Street entrances.

After the full intersection closure, travelers can expect continued closures of the right lanes of northbound Main and westbound 17th throughout the project as crews install the additional storm sewer system. Project work will generally take place on weekdays during daytime hours.

“We expect this project to relieve some existing drainage issues encountered along 17th Avenue and Main Street north of 17th Avenue after large storms,” said Allan Bryning, City of Longmont Senior Civil Engineer.

The $1.3 million storm drainage capital improvement project will be completed by E-Z Excavating, Inc., of Frederick.

Storm drainage projects such as this one are paid for out of the City of Longmont’s Storm Drainage Fund, which is financed by monthly residential and business stormwater rates.
