Survey Opens To Collect Community Input for Coffman Street Busway
The City of Longmont is requesting public input on the Coffman Street Busway project, which seeks to allow for safer travel options while reducing traffic congestion on Main Street. The Coffman Street Busway extends from 1st Avenue to 9th Avenue in downtown Longmont and will create an Enhanced Multi-Use Corridor (EMUC), featuring wider sidewalks, separated bike lanes, and dedicated bus lanes—while still accommodating the current traffic in the corridor.
The online community survey will be open for responses May 24 to June 6, 2021. This community survey welcomes responses from nearby community members, downtown Longmont visitors, and Coffman Street travelers. The survey is seeking to understand community members’ interests and concerns, which will help inform the project’s “Guiding Principles.” The Guiding Principles will ensure that proposed concepts for Coffman Street meet community interests and address community concerns. The survey can be found at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FVNNDNY. Paper copies are also available at the Development Services Center (385 Kimbark Street) or by calling (303) 651-8330.
About the Project
The Coffman Street Busway project seeks to make Coffman Street, from 1st Avenue to 9th Avenue, a world-class, multi-modal corridor to support residents, businesses, visitors, bikes and pedestrians, commuters, the environment, and the City. The multi-modal vision for this corridor includes wider sidewalks, tree lawns, protected bike lanes, on-street parking, one travel lane in each direction and bus lanes.
The wide sidewalks with tree lawns and protected bike lanes will provide for a more comfortable environment for people walking and biking; the wide sidewalks and tree lawns will also contribute to a vibrant downtown with pedestrian-oriented land uses. Protected bike lanes ensure minimal conflicts with other traffic on this corridor. Bus lane designs seek to create efficient bus movement, eliminate friction with cars, parking, people on bicycles, and pedestrians. Potential options for bus lanes include center- or side-running lanes, stops at intersections or in the middle of blocks, and others.
Currently the Coffman Street Busway project is developing design concepts, which will be evaluated against technical performance measurements and the Guiding Principles, which will be developed using community input. Construction is not planned to start until 2023.
The survey will open on May 24, 2021 and will close on June 6, 2021.
