Sustainability Mid-Year Update
Sustainability Mid-Year Update
To provide a transparent resource for residents of Longmont, the Longmont Indicators website offers updates and progress on various projects and programs from seven citywide Plans, including Envision Longmont and the Sustainability Plan. The midyear 2025 update to the site was recently completed and two new plans were added to the platform: the Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan and the Water Efficiency Plan.
The addition of the Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan, which was first drafted and approved by City Council in 2014, on Longmont Indicators serves as a measure of the work completed at parks and trails in Longmont. This plan provides insight into future park plans and highlights updates to park assets. These projections extend all the way to the year 2050. To ensure the Parks, Recreation and Trails Master Plan is being implemented effectively, the Parks Development Team uses a data-driven approach to prioritize improvement projects in Longmont’s parks and trails. Since 1996, water use in Longmont has decreased by 46.5 percent, despite significant growth in the city. These reductions have been accomplished through educational initiatives on water efficiency, effective pricing strategies by the Longmont Water Department, and improvements in the city’s water infrastructure. The recent 2025 update to the Water Efficiency Plan continues to set actions that reduce water usage within the City, including setting a target to continue to reduce water use by 3 percent from a 2022 baseline. More information about the City’s Water Efficiency Plan and the action plan to achieve a 3 percent reduction in water use by 2030 can now be found on Longmont Indicators.
In addition to the new plans, City staff recently provided progress updates on the five existing plans on the website. Highlights include that the City of Longmont experienced a significant increase in commercial waste diverted from the landfill. Additionally, there has been promising progress on projects aimed at addressing extreme heat in the city. Longmont has also expanded bus stop seating throughout town and has been awarded grants to implement a variety of projects and programs.
