Ten Years Later

Graphic Commemorating 2013 FloodThis week, the blog’s taking a slightly different approach. Instead of electric connections or broadband connections, we’re taking a moment to honor community connections – the sort that bound all of Longmont together in the wake of a massive natural disaster.

Today marks 10 years since the 2013 St. Vrain Flood. If that seems unreal, you’re not alone. Plenty of people still have vivid memories of the floodwaters that divided our city in two and how the community came together in a time of need. A lot of work has been done since then to repair, recover and help guard Longmont against future flooding.

This week, the City will be holding a number of commemoration events, including:

  • The opening of a photo exhibit at the Longmont Museum at 6 p.m. Thursday, sharing pictures taken by the community of the flood, its aftermath and the recovery
  • “Stories of the Flood,” led by the Motus Playback Improv Theatre at 7 p.m. Thursday at the museum, immediately after the opening of the photo exhibit
  • A guided flood commemoration trolley tour at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon on Saturday that will showcase through narratives how our community has become safer, more resilient and united in the face of adversity; all tours will start and end at the museum and require registration as space is limited

No event can fully capture those moments and what they meant to so many. But in sharing them together, we can take a moment to reaffirm our strength as a community.

Find out more about the events here. And whether or not you attend, please know that we appreciate the resilience and care for each other that so many of you continue to show every day.

That’s a connection we’re honored to be a part of.
