My nephew Gil is on a quest to know everything in the world.

He’s almost 10, so it comes with the territory. Sometimes the obsession has been space, complete with imaginary trips to Mars and proudly-related planetary trivia. (Did you know that Neptune is bright blue?) Sometimes he’s proudly displayed his talents at code-making, or his knowledge of dinosaurs, or his skill with card games and jokes. Next week, he’ll probably have solved the Denver Broncos’ offensive line situation and have them pointed at the Super Bowl.

And the thing is, he’s not unusual. His cousins soak in information just as quickly. About ballet. About history. About Star Wars and Batman. If it’s out there, they’re going to find it, they’re going to read it, and they’re going to know it.

You likely know kids just like them. And it’s because of that endless curiosity that we created the LPC Kids Corner.

The Kids Corner is a part of our website that’s set aside for children to learn more about electricity: where it comes from, how to stay safe around it, and how the heck Longmont got its own electric service in the first place. And once they spend some time there, they’ll have all kinds of great stuff to share at dinner, including:

• How far away you have to stay from fallen power lines in case they’re live. (35 feet!)
• How old Longmont’s first city-owned power source is. (A hydro plant we built in 1912 – and it’s still running!)
• How in power slang, a “scrubber” isn’t something that cleans floors and you don’t want “coke” with lunch.
• How Platte River Power Authority not only generates Longmont’s electricity, it has a buffalo herd living nearby.

Stop on by. Check it out. Let your kids explore. After all, if knowledge is power, then knowledge of power must be …. Hmm.

I’m sure there’s a word for it.
