Warning Sirens to be Tested on Mondays in April
During April, the City of Longmont will test the Outdoor Emergency Warning System at 10 am EVERY MONDAY. The siren will last two to four minutes. If you hear the siren and it isn’t during a testing period, seek cover immediately and tune to a Denver-area radio or television station for information.

Celebrate National Library Week
Celebrate National Library Week this week at the Longmont Public Library, 409 4th Avenue. Every 4-year-old who attends any regularly scheduled story time on April 12, 13, or 14 will receive a copy of this year’s One Book 4 Colorado picture book, and their siblings will receive a prize, too. Also, from 7 to 7:45 pm on Thursday, April 14, a special guest will gently introduce children age 7 and younger to a different way of “seeing” and reading the world during “Braille Storytime.”  Registration is not required for these programs. For more information visit bit.ly/1H7tCV8.

Join the Community Conversation on Mental Health
The Longmont community is invited to join the conversation on mental health issues. Several conversations are planned through the end of April. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 13, 4 pm to 6:30 p.m. at the Longmont Public Library, 4th Ave and Kimbark St. It’s an opportunity to meaningfully engage and increase understanding about mental health, identify mental health needs in the Longmont community, generate ideas about how to address those needs, and inspire all of us to take action in both small and big ways. See more information including a list of meeting dates and how to register. Call or email Karen Roney at 303-651-8633 or call Michele Waite at 303-651-8415.

Shred Your Private Documents for Free
Recycle personal documents safely and securely at this free event. Bring boxed or bagged papers to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, April 9. Also bring ID and a copy of your most recent Longmont utility bill. This event is for residential documents only; business materials will not be accepted. For information visit LongmontColorado.gov/solidwaste or call 303-651-8416.

Landlord Alliance: Fair Housing Basics
April is Fair Housing Month, and at this workshop you’ll get a refresher overview of Fair Housing basics and how the Fair Housing Act applies to you as a landlord. This presentation in the Landlord Alliance Training series is free and open to the public from 6:30 to 8 pm on Wednesday, April 13, at the Longmont Senior Center, 910 Longs Peak Avenue. For more information call 303-774-4384 or email SusanSpaulding@LongmontColorado.gov.

Waste Diversion Center Hours to Change
Friday, April 15, marks the start of spring/summer hours at Longmont’s Waste Diversion Center (WDC) at 140 Martin Street. The WDC will be open from 8:30 am to 5:45 pm, Monday through Saturday, and closed Sundays and holidays. Single-stream recycling bins are accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Longmont residents pay no fee to use the WDC; please bring identification and your most recent Longmont utility bill. Find more information about accepted items at LongmontColorado.gov/solidwaste or call 303-651-8416.

Spring Cleaning on City Streets
Each spring, the City of Longmont conducts a citywide street sweeping operation to remove dirt, debris and pollutants that build up during the winter months. Keeping the roadway in front of your house free of large objects and obstructions is the best way to assist street sweeping crews’ clean-up efforts. Sweeping is scheduled so that it will not disrupt residential trash and recycling service, curbside spring branch collection, or flushing of water lines. Visit bit.ly/sweepinglongmont to learn more or call 303-774-4446.

Park and Trail Restrooms Open April 15
Many park restrooms close for winter and reopen in spring (it’s a plumbing thing). April 15 is the date that ALL restrooms are once again open from 5 am to 11 pm daily. Restrooms are cleaned and restocked once per day. If you see a problem with a park or greenway public restroom facility, call 303-651-8446 or report it online at ServiceWorks.LongmontColorado.gov.

Comments Sought on Train Horn Rule
In 2005, the Federal Railroad Authority (FRA) issued new rules for locomotive horns at highway-rail crossings. The new rules established minimum volumes and durations, removed train engineers’ discretion on blowing horns at night, and mandated one-size-fits-all specifications for establishing Quiet Zones. The FRA is seeking comments on the rules and possible changes. For more information visit https://federalregister.gov/a/2016-04831. To provide a comment, click “Submit a Formal Comment.”
