Take boxed or bagged papers to be shredded to the Waste Diversion Center at 140 Martin Street between 9 am and 2 pm on Saturday, August 11. Volunteer Fair at the Library
Head to the Library at 409 4th Avenue between 10 am and noon on Saturday, August 11, to learn how you can help strengthen our community by volunteering. At the Library’s second annual Volunteer Fair for adults and teens, area nonprofits and volunteer groups will distribute information about their work and show you how you can help out. No registration is necessary; just stop by the Library and discover the opportunities that await you.

2nd Friday Fall Arts Preview
See what local arts groups have coming up in the Downtown Longmont Creative District from 6 to 9 pm on Friday, August 10. A variety of performing, visual and other arts groups will be featured at Downtown venues. Downtown also will host a Shop Loco Shop Mob all weekend. Would You Like to Serve Your Community?
Residents are invited to serve as official advisors to Longmont City Council on several boards and commissions. These advisory groups help the council make decisions on issues that affect the safety, economy and quality of life in Longmont. Applicants must be registered voters of Longmont for at least one year prior to being appointed and must reside inside Longmont city limits. Recreation Facility Closures
Every year in late summer, the City’s recreation facilities close for maintenance on systems and equipment. Centennial Pool, 1201 Alpine Street, will be closed August 13-25. Also, the gymnasiums at the Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Road, will be closed for curtain replacement August 13-22. Drop-in basketball is available at the St. Vrain Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Avenue, from 7 am to 2:30 pm and from 5 to 7 pm, Monday through Friday, August 13-17, and from 7 am to 5 pm on Saturday, August 18. TOP Operating to Begin Cleanup of Rider Well
Sometime in the next few days, TOP Operating Company will begin the cleanup of contaminated soil at the site of the Rider oil and gas well located near St. Vrain Road and County Line Road on the east side of Longmont. As a part of the City of Longmont’s ongoing investigations of oil and gas facility locations within the City, soil contamination was detected at this former well site. In cooperation with the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) and the Colorado Department of Health and Environment (CDPHE), TOP Operating is undertaking this clean up under state orders.

It’s Time for Dog Swim!
After Roosevelt Activity Pool at 903 8th Avenue closes to humans for the summer, the pool chemicals are neutralized making the water safe for dogs. All friendly dogs are welcome to splash and play from 9 am to noon or 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, August 14, and Wednesday, August 15. Balls and bags are provided, and you can visit several dog-friendly vendors. No people swimming, and thank you for picking up after your pooch! Fee: $4 per dog; recreation passes not valid. Buffalo Harvest at Sandstone Ranch
From 10:30 am to noon on Saturday, August 25, learn why the buffalo was so important to the Cheyenne and other Plains Indian tribes, and how it provided them with everything from food, to clothing, to shelter at the Sandstone Ranch Visitors & Learning Center, 3001 Sandstone Drive. This family-friendly program will be outdoors, weather permitting, and is best suited for children ages 5 and older. There is a suggested donation of $2/child, $4/adult collected at the event. Help Make the New Fire Safety House a Reality
In 1989, the City, the Longmont Breakfast Optimist Club, and the St. Vrain Valley School District joined to launch the first Fire Safety House, a “house on wheels” used to teach Longmont area children about fires, fire safety and how to escape a fire. Improvements to RR Crossings on Atwood Street Set to Begin Week of Aug. 13
The timber railroad crossings located along Atwood Street from 4th Avenue to Longs Peak Avenue have been identified for upgrade this summer in a partnership between the City of Longmont and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF). Construction of the crossing upgrades is set to take place during the weeks of August 13, 20 and 27.
