Xcel Energy Plans Controlled Burn
Xcel Energy will be doing construction in east Longmont near Third Avenue and Pace Street to install new pipeline during the week of August 15 and is expected to be complete within that week. (The construction schedule is subject to change based on the potential for inclement weather or other circumstances.) As part of this work, natural gas will need to be removed from the existing pipeline through “flaring” or controlled burn. If you are outside when the flaring occurs, you might see a flame up to 40 feet in height at the work site. In addition, you may hear the sound of natural gas venting from the pipe, and/or smell the mercaptan odorant (which produces a sulfur or “rotten egg” odor). However, if you smell it inside your home or business, please leave your house immediately and avoid using electric switches such as lights, garage door openers and phones. Once you are safely away, call 911 or call Xcel Energy’s gas emergency line at 1-800-895-2999 from a neighbor’s or from outside your home so they can investigate. If you have questions about this work, please contact Xcel Energy at 1-800-895-4999.
